A Guide To

State Boards & Commissions

About State Boards & Commissions

The Connecticut Statutes have established many state boards and commissions. Often the appointing authorities will contact Sullivan & LeShane to see if our clients and business associates are interested in serving on these various boards and commissions.

Sullivan & LeShane inventoried the various boards/commissions that currently exist and has categorized them under subject headings.  If you have an interest in a particular one, contact Sullivan & LeShane. We will provide you with specific information on the charge of the board/commission, appointment qualifications, member profiles, meeting schedules and assist in securing an actual appointment.

Serving on a state board/commission is a terrific opportunity to demonstrate your expertise or to participate on a subject you have a personal interest in. Many of the boards/commissions have appointments for members of the public.

  • Each commission/board is different in its charge, number of appointments, length of term, qualifications, and meeting schedule.

  • Most appointments to state boards and commissions are usually made by the following authorities: Governor, Speaker, President Pro Tempore, Senate and House Majority Leaders & Senate and House Minority Leaders.

  • Although the Secretary of State has compiled a list of boards/commissions, vacancies can best be determined through contacting the Legislative Library or the Governor’s Office.

  • Some of the appointments are competitive, while others remain vacant due to lack of interest.

  • Appointments to state boards/commissions can sometimes be political.  The appointing authority may ask for your political affiliation in order to balance the membership.

  • Members of state boards/commissions serve as public servants during the length of their terms, and do not receive a salary.  However, a few boards/commissions do offer mileage reimbursement or small stipends.

If you are interested in serving on a particular state board/commission contact Sullivan & LeShane.  We can not only assist you in obtaining the necessary information you will need to guide you through the appointment process but can “run interference” in negotiating the appointment process.
